Poetry and Jazz have much in common. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Beatniks, also known as the Beats, celebrated poetry reading in small clubs much like and sometimes along side their jazz brethren. One such Beat poet was Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who passed away a few days ago at the age of 101. While the Beats were found in most major cities, San Francisco was of particular note; as it was mecca for the Beat scene, long before the hippies rose in prominence. In this hour, we will celebrate the Beat and the cool laid-back feeling that it that propagated while simultaneously turning up the intellectual flame of social commentary.
